Colin (林 Lín), also known as Human by Puro, is the main protagonist and player character of Changed and its special edition.
Appearance
The Human appears to be an ordinary, scrawny man with messy brown hair and bright blue eyes: the only clothing he is shown wearing is a pair of latex shorts.
Personality
Colin is relatively a skinny, middle-aged man. He has amnesia, which means he has no clue what is going on at the labs, and is facing latex creatures who can absorb or transform him with a touch. All he has going for him is his wits, relatively fast speed compared to most of the other creatures, and Puro's help (if Colin was nice to him).
Dr. K lampshades Colin being up against insurmountable odds in trying to escape the lab facility given it being swarmed with escaped experiments that want to consume him on sight. However, the man often slips on rubbish or manages to get himself into predicaments that attract the attention of the latex beasts.
He's been in cryogenic stasis for so long, he can't remember how he ended up in the tower or who's been taking care of him.
Noted by Puro, while Colin is physically frail which makes him unable to move heavy metal crates, Colin can somehow move surprisingly fast. Since being in stasis for so long, any food given to him to give him an instant energy burst, completely restoring it's stamina. Later on this is the obvious trap of a latex beast lying in wait.
The Human has very few, if any, lines of non-choice dialogue, and mostly conveys his feelings through pictorial speech bubbles. Even that, he rarely speaks and often stays silent for most of the time.
He wants to escape the tower complex to the outside world, not knowing there may be nothing for him out in the ruins before learning of such in the generator room at the Aquatic Area. Every time a latex creature captures and starts assimilating him, it is always an unwilling transfurmation, but there's nothing he can do to fight back against these predators once in their clutches.
He doesn't realize he carries the deadly incurable Pale Virus and it is slowly killing him.
Background
The Human wakes up in a room he does not recognize, having been in cryogenic stasis for so long that he has no memories of how he wound up in the tower or who has been taking care of him. He instantly gets worried about where he is and does not recognize his nearby surroundings, though he does remember being kidnapped, before simply thinking that it's just a reality show. When he tries to leave, he encounters many mysterious slime-like creatures that want to take over his body. After a while, he comes across mysterious dark latex creatures, to which he needs to sneak by when the lights go out.
Eventually, he finds a cave-like area with a mysterious Dragon-like dark latex creature. After the chase they eventually spare him. When he goes through a corridor with the very same dark creatures, he passes out, though he does wake up by a tree soon after. After avoiding another bunch of mysterious beings he eventually meets a dark latex monster, who does not attack him, and instead introduces himself as Puro.
He asks the human for the 8-digit code for the door where he was earlier ambushed by a female green-eyed snow leopard. The human eventually obtains the code and goes further, eventually getting into the vents, where at first he is ambushed, and later chased by two different snow leopards, along the way talking to Puro in his "home".
Trivia
- Colin sometimes always has his latex shorts a bit pulled down by unknown reasons, but never bothered to pull it back up. This was shown across specific scenes in the game.
- This might be simply an art choice.
- For some reason, even when Colin is silent, Prototype can understand his intention very well, as shown in the Greenhouse Area where Colin tried to recruit it for access sharing.
- At Steam medal level 5, the human's canon name is revealed to be Colin, per the Changed booster pack.
- No matter the ending, Colin suffers one or two permanent side effects, either from the outside world or the lab, which is :
- Transfurmation : Easy Betrayal Ending, Too Late, No Trust, Indecision
- Dying to Pale Virus : Leave, Stay (unconfirmed)
- Losing Bond with Puro : Stay, Too Late
One of these endings has Dr. K kill Puro, forcibly transfuring Colin before injecting him with drugs until they break his mind into blind obedience.
- He passes away in the "Leave" ending, finally succumbing to the lethal virus Dr. K feared he was carrying. As the Steam achievement shows, Puro sadly cares about his human friend's determination so much, the latex wolf doesn't assimilate him, burying him among the ruins instead.
- Many people confuse the white non-latex, wolf-transfurred Colin as the Boykisser, mainly for it's white fur coat.
- Boykisser is originally an unnamed cat OC created by MauzyMice on X for art practicing, before blowing up for the infamous 'ur a boykisser' meme that spread around the internet.
- This also applies to Dr. K, but more common.
- He is described as 'a normal man (ordinary person in Special Edition)', establishing him as being at least adult age.
- In the Special Edition, he is shown to likely be afraid of snakes.
- Almost every latex creature in the building turns him into one of their own if they're not outright assimilating him. He also ends up being turned into a dark latex or white non-latex wolf in every ending except "Stay" and "Leave".
- As part of the Genetic Project's precautionary measures, the Benign Latex he wears will restrain him if it awakens, immobilises him either with it's long tail or blindfolds him with latex, all so he can't escape or pose a danger to any other humans.
- There'll be instances where the player won't immediately lose control of Colin as he succumbs to double transfur fusions or other, but by then, it's already too late for him.
- Even after most transfurs, the human retains his blue eye colour throughout the game. This implies that latex assimilation has no effect on certain characteristics of a host (barring special cases).
- In one of the Special Edition bad endings, he gets transfurred into a white latex creature and temporarily loses his personality to the white latex collective mind. Puro recovers him somewhat, but it's implied he's mostly lost his memory while he merely kept his personality. However, he does communicate with Puro similar to an infant, with coos and gargles, sounding out his name, implying he kept his memory of Puro.
- Colin is said to canonically be forklift certified. This was said by DragonSnow himself.[2]
